ALAMOSA CITY COUNCIL
COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

Subject/Title:

Motion authorizing the sponsorship of $5,000 to five entities in varying amounts as detailed in the Council Communication.

Recommended Action:

The Sponsorship Committee recommends that City Council authorize the sponsorship of $5,000 to the five entities detailed below.

Background:

The last several years, City Council has seen an increase in requests for sponsorship funds.  Often times, the funds have been spent before the end of the year leaving Council struggling to find funds for support.  In order to prevent this first-come-first-serve problem and allow Council to have a complete picture of the types of sponsorship requests when making a decision, a more structured process was discussed and approved at the January 16th, 2019 City Council meeting.  Councilors Vigil and Carson volunteered to serve on the Sponsorship Committee tasked with reviewing the applications and making a recommendation to City Council.

Below is the recommendation from the Sponsorship Committee.

  • Cinco de Mayo Block Party - $1,000 plus use of the stage ($200)
  • Alamosa Round-UP - $1,950 plus use of the stage ($200) and tent ($300)
  • Rollin Deep Car and Bike Show - $550 plus use of the stage ($200)
  • National Awareness and Safety Week - $500
  • SummerFest on the Rio- $1,000 plus use of the stage ($200) and tent ($300)

Attached are the full applications.

Issue Before the Council:

Does Council wish to authorize $5,000 to the five entities as detailed in this communication?

Alternatives:

Council can award the sponsorship funds as recommended or modify the amounts.

Fiscal Impact:

The 2022 Sponsorship line item provides for $10,000.  These awards will expend 1/2 of the budget allowing for the remaining $5,000 to fund the second round for events in the last 6 months of the year.

Legal Opinion:

The City Attorney will be present for any questions.

Conclusion:

During the January 16, 2019 City Council meeting, Council discussed utilizing a more structured process to award sponsorship funds.  Using that process, Councilors Vigil and Carson reviewed the applications and recommend that $5,000 be awarded to five different entities for the first half of 2022.
